Utah logs roughly 520 emergency department visits and 227 inpatient stays for eating disorders each year, underlining the need for specialized care in both Salt Lake City and rural counties. Harvard School of Public Health data from 2024 also points out that nearly 280,000 Utah residents will have an eating disorder sometime in their lifetime. Many of these residents could be young people who developed disordered eating habits in high school. The Utah Department of Health’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey began omitting questions that might indicate an emerging eating disorder, such as intentional vomiting and meal skipping, in 2007, but 41% of high schoolers indicated they were trying to lose weight in 2023, up from about 39% in 2021. Comprehensive eating disorder treatment is available via university medical centers, private residential programs and telehealth partnerships.
